Overview: The Simulation Technology Specialist (STS) enhances the clinical simulation program through provision of technical expertise, support for department operations, and participation in various aspects of Simulated Learning Experiences in the College of Nursing. The STS reports to the Center Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provide Technical support for all aspects of simulated learning experiences.
a. Calibrate and adjust the mannequin and associated peripheral equipment in the simulator rooms.
b. Maintain and update simulation hardware and software; retain related documentation including warrantees and contacts with manufacturer's technical support services.
c. Maintain simulators, task trainers, and related peripheral equipment such as monitors, conducting routine maintenance and upkeep to assure optimum performance.
d. Contact manufacturer's technical support services for problems requiring their involvement.
2. Perform pre- and post-simulation activities.
a. Before simulations, verify that computerized manikins are functioning as desired.
b. Conduct technical set-up before a simulation, including: moulage, equipment and supply placement, programming of scenarios, and quality checks prior to the simulation.
c. Care for/clean manikins and equipment post-simulation, ensuring readiness for use in the next simulation, or initiating repairs and recalibrations as needed.
3. Operate simulations as assigned.
a. Ensure thorough understanding of the optimal progression of each simulation, and plan/prepare for possible deviations from the preferred pathway.
b. Control the manikin and monitors during a simulation.
c. Provide various vocal characters as needed, i.e. patient voice, pharmacist, provider, etc.
d. Operate the simulation capture system, recording and saving all simulations.
e. Operate communication devices within the Control Room, such as intercoms.
f. Communicate with the faculty sponsor/instructor with any questions, concerns, or suggestions, prior to and after each simulation.
4. Maintain inventory for high-fidelity simulation rooms.
a. Identify reorder points for consumable supplies for these rooms.
b. Keep record of consumables used in high fidelity simulations.
5. Communicate in a timely manner with Director and Simulation Coordinator.
a. Any problem preventing the use of a high-fidelity manikin, or any problem that will impact the schedule of simulations, must be reported to the Director immediately.
b. All other problems will be reported for the Simulation Coordinator.
6. Keep abreast of industry trends which may impact the Simulated Learning Environment. Continue education via special interest groups, periodicals, and web-based learning.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Associates degree in Nursing, EMS/EMT/Paramedics, Respiratory Tech or ED Tech required. Health care simulation programs, technologies and applications. Computer hardware and software applications relevant to simulator functions. Audiovisual equipment. Working knowledge of physiology and pharmacology. Ability to express technical information clearly and simply to non-technical persons. Learn new software and hardware quickly and independently.
Assess, troubleshoot and fix equipment failures in a timely manner. Work well under pressure, set priorities, make critical decisions, meet deadlines, and work independently. Communicate and work with university faculty, students, community partners, and outside technical support.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities: Bachelor's degree or higher education and one year experience with simulation technology. In addition, five years' experience with acutely ill medical-surgical or ICU patients preferred.
