DUTIES:
The incumbent will provide patient care and assistance for complex, specialized patients including such measures as personal hygiene, positioning, elimination, and socialization in the completion of all direct patient care in the clinic setting. Job responsibilities may include: Initiates and collects patient data including MC reminders, vital signs, weights, oximetry, accuchecks and the collect of specimens. Initiates and performs specialized nonstandard and complex procedures including urinary bladder scanning, foley catheterization an irrigation, oxygen therapy, dressing changes, ostomy care, tracheostomy care, EKG, spirometry and foot care including nail care. Prepares feet prior to minor surgical procedures. Initiates procedure preparation adapting them to the patient’s physical and emotional needs before, during and after procedures, observing and managing therapeutic or possible complications resulting from the procedure. Knowledgeably initiates and performs nursing measures to prevent complications by recognizing deviations and/or changes in patient conditions. Knowledgeably recognizes and responds/initiates emergency measures. Responds promptly to emergency situations in the clinic. Assist with the care of patients requiring specialized care. Monitors and implements infection control measures. Provides safe administration of medications in accordance with MedicalCenter’s and Nursing Service policy and monitors side effects. Continues to keep updated on new medications. Prioritizes effectively and manages time productively in the clinical setting. Utilizes safe work practices including body mechanics. Utilizes protective safety devices, universal precautions as well as maintains a clean safe physical environment. WORK SCHEDULE: MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY 7:30AM TO 4:00PM

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Must be a US Citizen. Graduate of a school of practical nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing (Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed. Possess a current, full, active and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. Proficient in spoken and written English (LPN's appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d)).

Specialized Experience:
To qualify for the GS 6 level, you must have 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS 5 level or equivalent, fully meeting all performance requirement for the GS 5 LPN. Experience includes technically proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient population; ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patients' condition; ability to observe, identify and respond to the patient's needs for medication, equipment-assisted care; prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and perform treatments; ability to recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance and initiate appropriate emergency interventions; understand human behavior, patient motivations and reactions to situations; establish constructive relationships with patients and families to elicit feelings and attitudes, and to promote positive relationships, communication and socialization skills; skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which includes preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during and following the procedure.

If Combination is used for qualification Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. It will be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
