Note: Call requires a 20 minute response time from the time an employee is notified to the time they are dressed and ready in the OR for work.
JOB SUMMARY:
To maintain the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection. To assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures and sponges during surgery. Provides care for patients and families as delegated by the nurse in accordance with the appropriate minimum standard of care. Prepares and sterilizes all equipment used within the operating room and gastroenterology room. Assists MD and RN with gastroenterology procedures and assists RN with pre and post procedure tasks as delegated.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTION:
1. Before an operation, helps set up the operating room and organizes sterile table with surgical instruments and equipment, sterile linens and sterile solutions. Prepares gastroenterology room for procedure. 2. Checks, audits and operates equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, diagnostic equipment, laparoscope, orthopedic and endoscopy equipment. Performs decontamination, sterilization and repackaging of supplies used throughout the hospital. Sterilization equipment includes but is not limited to autoclave, flasher, washer, and STERIS machine Processes all used equipment daily. Checks all supplies used for proof of sterilization. Repackages supplies according to established standards of sterility and departmental cleaning rotations. Notifies manager of equipment maintenance needs. 3. Scrubs hands and arms, puts on sterile operating room attire to be able to work within the sterile field established around the patient and to handle the sterilized instruments, equipment and supplies used in the procedure. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon. 4. Holds retractors, cuts sutures and applies dressings as directed. 5. Cleans and restocks the operating room and gastroenterology room. Checks linen supply, inventory, rooms and blanket warmer daily. Folds linen for packaging. Orders supplies. 6. Assists with performing gastroenterology procedures. Obtains specimens. Assists RN and physician as needed. 7. Provides age-appropriate care for all age groups. Anticipates potential adverse changes in patient care and notifies RN. Interacts effectively with patients. Maintains safety of clients. 8. Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation. 9. Performs all other duties as assigned. Participates in the orientation and education of others. Assists physician, physician assistant or RN with administering medication. Assists with vital signs, gathering data and ambulating patients. ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Is present and prepared for work as scheduled. 5. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in job. Contributes, develops, supports and/or carries out new ideas and methods in cooperation with co-workers and supervisors. Is self-motivated. 6. Demonstrates support for and ability to work as part of a team on achieving departmental and organizational goals. Develops positive working relationships, is receptive to and acts upon input from other team members and departments and is willing and able to compromise as needed. 7. Demonstrates organizational skills and effective use of time. 8. Communicates effectively. Able to express ideas/opinions, uses appropriate congruent communications methods. Adheres to strict customer confidentiality standards, recognizing that even acknowledgment of privileged information is prohibited. 10. Supports and complies with the National Patient Safety Goals and quality improvement initiatives. 11. Demonstrates good judgment and decision making skills whenever appropriate and necessary. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Completion of a post-high school program as an operating room technician preferred 2. Certification from the Liaison Council on Certification for Surgical Technologists (within six months of hire) is desired. 3. Completion of certified Nursing Assistant program within six months of hire. 4. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified. 5. On the job training may be utilized. Proctoring will be performed by other staff. Physician input will also be obtained on employees with on the job training.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees. 3. Must have a high energy level with ability to work under the stress of the operating room atmosphere and exhibit emotional maturity, stability and flexibility. 4. Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment. 5. Needs to possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details. 6. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment. 7. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients. JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear. 2. The OR/CS Tech is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The OR/CS Tech is also required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch. 3. The OR/CS Tech must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 4. Full range of body motion and flexibility is required on a daily basis. 5. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to verify visual and audio alarms on machines.
