Job Description The RN in Allergy & Asthma is part of a team of two physicians (including a new Pediatric Allergist) and 8 RNs in a busy department. The patient population is mostly pediatric - young adult. However, they see all patient populations. There are two nurses assigned to each physician on a daily basis, and one nurse designated as “shot†nurse for the day. The average day starts 30-60 minutes prior to the first patient. Prep involves opening rooms, printing the patient schedule, calibrating the ENO machine and the spirometries. Turning on the machines and hood in the sterile, negative-pressure room. Days while in the “shot nurse†role involving mixing and drawing up the allergy shots needed for the day.
The average day for the shot nurse involves giving injections and monitoring patients for 30 minutes post-injection for complications such as anaphylactic shockâ€"and responding appropriately to any patient adverse reactions. For the other nurses, the day includes rooming and assessing patients. Skin testing for allergies is a primary part of the day along with running nebulizer treatments…as well as patient education about their allergies and environmental control in addition to teachings on how to properly use their inhalers.
The Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, patient education, and discharge planning. The RN provides nursing care to patients and their significant others using an interdisciplinary approach across the continuum of care. The RN uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of nursing care for assigned patients from admission through discharge. The RN provides leadership in various roles that include, but are not limited to preceptor role, lead/charge nurse, and committee member. The American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Nurses provide a basis for practice.

Compensation Detail: Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $23.40 per hour.
