POSITION PURPOSE
Physician Assistant/
Advanced Practice Nurse
Provides primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.
Provide nocturnist coverage in the Hematology & Oncology and BMT inpatient units.
Provide professional healthcare to patients in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with policies and procedures.
Assist in the therapeutic management and care oversight of hematology, oncology and blood and marrow transplant patients.
Provide independent initial assessment and management of urgent care issues at night to patient pop! ulations.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
DIVISION RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
2.
Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
3.
Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
4.
Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
5.
Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
6.
Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
7.
Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
8.
Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
9.
Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activit! ies and preventive behaviors.
1.
Under the supervisio! n of the corresponding attending physicians, assume in-house first call for inpatient hematological oncology, solid tumor oncology and BMT service during designated coverage hours.
2.
From 6:00 pm, participate in sign-out activities from the daytime care team and sign off to the incoming daytime team at 7:00 am following completion of shift.
3.
Be first on call for in-house emergencies and other issues for admitted patients on the services covered and respond promptly to all pages and questions related to the care of patients in assigned inpatient services.
4.
Complete admission and discharge paperwork for patients admitted to assigned services and perform related duties for said admissions and discharges.
Provide post-admission assessment for night time admissions.
5.
Provide initial assessment and management of urgent care issues at night related to internal medicine or critical care n! eeds.
Evaluate patients and render care, within the scope of practice outlined by state statute and as defined in the collaborative agreement or prescribing guidelines, in the inpatient setting.
Perform examination of patients, and obtain/document information regarding patient history.
6.
May write admission, discharge, transfer, medication and other orders as required for the management of patient care, under the supervision of a physician.
Write routine admission and discharge orders.
7.
Teach, counsel and assist patients and families regarding diet, diseases, treatment and follow-up care and respond to immediate post-transplant patientsâ questions if and when they call the inpatient unit.
8.
Monitor and evaluate patients in consultation with attending physician.
Liaise and update supervising physicians who are on-call from home, including attending physicians and fellows on servic! e.
9.
Perform routine therapeutic procedures, includi! ng blood and marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy.
Assist physician in cell harvesting procedure if necessary.
10.
Acquire information on the most current developments and trends in the professional field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associations and literature.
11.
Participate in quality assurance activities and/or clinical trials, including protocol development, patient eligibility and monitoring.
12.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education Requirements
Physician Assistant
Bachelorâs Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
Advanced Practice Nurse
Masterâs Degree
(appropriate education and experience may be substituted on equivalent basis)
Experience
·
Zero years of experienced required
·
Five years expe! rience as an a Physician Assistant practitioner preferred with at least 1-2 years in a clinic or hospital environment working with chemotherapy or hematology/oncology patients preferred.
Critical care, urgent care or ICU experience preferred.
