Medical Assistant performs general and clinical duties under the direction of the RN, Nurse Practitioner and/or physician, and is responsible for facilitating the examination of a selected group of outpatients (i.e. infertility and gynecological patients).
Supports the philosophy, policies and procedures of the Division of Patient Care Services. Interacts with physicians, nurses, and ancillary personnel in a professional manner. Prepares examination rooms and equipment, and selects instruments using aseptic or sterile techniques as appropriate. Prepares procedure rooms by creating sterile field with necessary instruments in a sterile fashion.
Escort patients to rooms and follow plans of care initiated by the nurse or physician. Assists physician and/or nurse in patient examinations, and/or procedures (ova and/or sperm retrieval; embryo transfer, endometrial biopsy, etc.). Performs measurements of vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration), height and weig! ht; venipunctures, injections and other simple procedures as d! irected by the nurse or physician. Collects and processes laboratory specimens.
Education: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program (Associate, Diploma or Certificate) required. Incumbents in the position prior to April, 2008 may substitute this educational requirement with the following statement â€" minimum of 2 years work experience in an outpatient setting preferred.
Licensure: Medical Assistant Certification is preferred or comparable experience of at least 5 years in an outpatient clinical setting. Basic Life Support (BLS) certified preferred.
