DUTIES:
The RN is directly responsible to the designated manager.
The function of the Registered Nurse is t! o provide, direct, and supervise the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran population.
The RN possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting. This broad based clinical knowledge enables the RN to effectively implement health promotion and prevention interventions, manage acute and chronic illness states, assist veterans in the attainment of optimal levels of functioning through rehabilitation, and provide supportive measures for the dying patient and their significant others.
The registered nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age related needs of the patient served in his/her assigned service area. This knowledge includes an understanding of the changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population. He/ ! she must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patientÂ'! s current health status, which will facilitate the delivery of care appropriate to the age specific needs of the adult and geriatric patient.
The Urgent Care area provides outpatient services for more than 7,300 patients/year at the Tomah VA Medical Center. The nursing personnel are Advanced Cardiac Life Supp0l1 (ACLS) trained. Patients presenting to the Urgent Care Clinic with a health concern generally require immediate care and/or evaluation of the need for hospitalization or follow-up. The nursing process is applied as a systematic and continuous process and nursing care is provided by RNs. High risk, high volume, or problem-prone diagnosis include but are not limited to chest pain, respiratory distress, abdominal pain, urinary tract infections, and psychiatric issues. Nursing care is provided all days of the week and all hours of the day by registered nurses and health technicians. The nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation is a! pplied on an ongoing, systematic manner to all patients. The unit and nursing staff also support others areas as needed and accompany patients upon transfer to other facilities if necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or th! e District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of pro! fessional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree (BSN)
- 2 Years Acute Care and/or Urgent Care Experience
- ACLS certified upon completion of orientation
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years o! f experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a ! related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
